NFT Auction Held in Freddie Mercury’s Honor

This past week, there was an NFT Art Auction in celebration of the iconic lead singer of Queen, Freddie Mercury. In Honor of his 75th birthday, the proceeds from the event will be donated to fighting AIDS worldwide.

Superrare is the leading hub marketplace for digital art, or “CryptoArt,” and they collaborated with The Mercury Phoenix Trust, which was founded by Queen’s manager Jim Beach in honor of Mercury to focus on funding HIV education and battling HIV/AIDS. They released four brand-new, 1 of 1 NFT artworks inspired by the late bisexual legend himself. The collection was curated by the Six Agency, which focuses on the development, funding, and conceptualizing web3 projects.

“Six was honored to curate an incredible collection of artists to celebrate the life and impact of Mercury,” a statement from the Six Agency says. “After meeting with the Mercury Phoenix Trust, we knew that if Freddie were alive today, he would be excited about the creative potential of the NFT space.”

The auction went live for 75 hours, and the starting auction price was 2 ETH, which transfers to nearly $6,000 in U.S. Dollars. Over the last 29 years, The Mercury Phoenix Trust has donated over $17 million in Mercury’s name, all in memory of Freddie, who died back in 1991 due to AIDS-related causes.

The artists who contributed to the NFT auction by creating Freddie Mercury inspired pieces are Blake Kathryn, Chad Knight, Mat Maitland, and MBSJQ. These four digital artists were given a simple brief and instructions—to create an NFT piece of art that reflects the many different aspects of Mercury’s beloved persona.

“You can do whatever you want with my work; just never make me boring.” – Freddie Mercury

Blake Kathryn, the artist from Los Angeles, created a dreamlike piece with depictions of Mercury’s piano and crown in a pastel world titled “Sanctuary.” Chad Knight is a 10-year veteran in the realm of digital art; he also is the head of 3D design at Nike; he created his own, heaven-like digital world with a huge golden statue titled “Celebration of Uniquity.”

Mat Maitland created a surrealist-pop image collage of Mercury titled “Somebody To Love,” an homage to the late singer’s song. And finally MBSJQ created a vibrant Mercury bust circulating on a record in what seems to be a trophy case.
