Newspaper criticized for running anti-trans ad

The Minnesota Star Tribune, the most widely read newspaper in the state, has come under fire for printing a full page ad that many consider to be anti-trans.

The ad was placed after the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) began deliberation for a proposal to allow transgender students to play sports. The proposal would mean female-to-male students who have started hormone treatments would play on male teams. Students not undergoing hormone therapies, but identifying as trans would have the opportunity to choose either team.

The proposal also requires school districts to provide private shower and changing facilities to any student who requests them.

Similar policies have been adopted in several states, including Iowa and South Dakota, traditionally more conservative states neighboring Minnesota.

The advertisement was placed by the Minnesota Child Protection League, who prompt parents to call MSHSL and ask them to oppose the policy. Other conservative groups have rallied their cause with the advertisement including Minnesota Catholic Conference.
