Rising Trans pop singer Jae XO is set to release their new single on October 10, perfect for the spooky Halloween season!
The song “Dancin’ In The Full Moon” is high-energy dance pop combined with disco influences and campy, fun references to Halloween imagery. The quality of sound is clear, as the single was produced by Velvet Code and recorded with Denise Barbarita—a three-time-Grammy-winning sound engineer and mixer.
According to a press release, inspiration for the single came when Jae XO was battling writer’s block. They began brewing a blend of herbs in their kitchen to spark creativity. They claim, “I was immediately hit with a groove that made my bones move. It was the fastest I’ve ever written a song, and within days, I had a full demo ready.”
Besides being a festive song celebrating impending Halloween, Jae XO claims that it is a song celebrating trans resilience, power, and magic. “Trans people are mystical, powerful beings who fight through hell and back just to live authentically,” they state. “‘Dancin’ In The Full Moon’ is about harnessing that inner strength, charging ourselves with confidence and expression, and finding joy in the fight.”
Jae XO hopes that the song serves a deeper purpose than just being a Halloween party anthem, claiming, “Dan Savage once said, ‘During the darkest days of the AIDS crisis, we buried our friends in the morning, protested in the afternoon, and danced all night.’ This song will make people want to dance, but it’s never just dancing. It’s mourning; it’s fighting, and it’s celebrating all at once.”
Besides the dance-pop connection to resilience, this song echoes something that I think many people in our community agree: There is something about Halloween that is inherently gay! Halloween gives the general public a day to explore the “taboo,” societally shamed, and overall queerness without judgement! This single perfectly mixes the LGBTQ+ love for Halloween and fun dance music, so I will have it on rotation at my Halloween party.
