A Musical Christmas Story
Town Hall Arts Center presents A Christmas Story, The Musical, based on a book by Joseph Robinette with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul. Based on the 1983 Warner Bros. beloved film, Nick Sugar directs and choreographs this charming and adventurous Christmas show.
Adapted faithfully from the film’s storyline, A Christmas Story is about a young boy’s bold crusade for a Christmas gift he so badly desires: “A Red Ryder BB gun with a compass in the stock, and this thing that tells time.” Besides a few beautifully sung ballads by Eryn Carman, albeit oddly placed, there’s nothing dry about this this holiday classic — except for a few throats.
It’s through the fourth wall that Scott McLean comfortably narrates the story as Jean Shepherd, a radio personality who meanders unnoticed among the characters, providing animated commentary as the plot unfolds.

The cast of 22 energetic and talented performers bring to life this comical holiday spectacle. “There’s never a dull moment when 11 of the cast members are kids, and two are dogs!”says director Nick Sugar. “Directing A Christmas Story has been a nostalgic trip back in time for me, filled with great memories of family, friends, and holidays.”
The dowdy teacher Miss Shields, played by Mary McGroary, sheds her stodgy classroom attire for a festive, regal-red dress and busts out an impressive tap number alongside Joshua Cellar, a talented up-and-comer to be sure.
And for you dog lovers out there, Bosco and Tippa, the neighbor’s menacing hounds steal the show and Christmas dinner when they gallivant on stage.
Scenic Designer Douglas Clarke built a set that would handily find its way to the top of any creative set designer list. Intricately detailed and cleverly constructed, each set piece can be easily be pulled apart or tucked away to reveal the next chapter in Ralphie’s (Evan Gibley) tall-taled adventure. I could be wrong, but something tells me Tina Anderson might have also had a hand at crafting this show’s amazing set.
Town Hall Art Center’s production of A Christmas Story is full of whimsical dance numbers, brims with holiday cheer, and makes for a fun way to enjoy a traditional holiday favorite. The show is certain to sell out, so grab your tickets while they last!
A Christmas Story, The Musical runs through December 30, 2016.
