Meow Wolf Mourns Death of Co-Founder Matt King

Matt King, co-founder, and creative director of the popular, immersive art experience Meow Wolf, died unexpectedly on July 9, 2022. He was 37 years old. No cause of death has been made public.

King was a pioneer of immersive art. His joy for creation was expansive and contagious. Meow Wolf was the brainchild of Quinn Tincher and King, and their collaborative and creative partnership made immersive art popular before it was widely recognized as part of the current zeitgeist.

King said that Meow Wolf was part of his life’s purpose, all in the service of creating a better world.

Meow Wolf is a Santa Fe-based arts and entertainment company that creates immersive, interactive experiences designed to transport audiences of all ages into story and exploration. In 2019, Meow Wolf expanded beyond Santa Fe and opened Kaleidoscope, the world’s first artist-driven ride at Elitch Gardens in Denver.

A permanent Meow Wolf installation in Denver’s Convergence Station opened in September 2021. Billed as unforgettable and transformational, the Meow Wolf experience offers immersive mind-bending, psychedelic art with a narrative that takes visitors on a journey of discovery into a surreal, science-fictional epic. The four-story, immersive art exhibition is home to more than 70 unique installations, rooms, and portals.

“What makes Meow Wolf so different than a typical art installation is that it’s not something you look at; it’s something you immerse yourself in,” says Forbes.
