Marlon Wayans Talks About Trans Child

Pen WatkinsBy Pen WatkinsNovember 22, 2023Updated:June 1, 20262 Mins Read

Marlon Wayans, a beloved Black icon and comedian known from the Scary Movie franchise, The Wayan’s Brothers Show, In Living Color, and many other films and series, has long been an ally of the LGBTQ+ community. When his oldest child came out, he supported them in a 2019 post. Amidst a wave of homophobic and transphobic comments, Wayans defended his child, who was 19 at the time. Now that they have come out as trans, his support continues.

Wayan’s son, Kai, whose pronouns are he/they, was mentioned while Marlon Wayans was on The Breakfast Club radio show. Like with most artistry, many of Marlon Wayan’s real-life experiences are translated into comedy specials or serve as inspiration for his various works. During The Breakfast Club, he mentioned how his last comedy special, God Loves Me, had jokes centered around the infamous slap from the 2022 Oscars, and discusses how his relationships with the three individuals involved in the slap—Jada Pinkett Smith, Will Smith, and Chris Rock—have evolved since it has happened.

His upcoming specials are no different in regards to real-life situations being looked at through a comedic lens. Wayans plans to name the special in which he talks about his son, Kai, Skittles, or Rainbow Child. He said regarding his upcoming special, which has yet to be named, “I talk about the transition. Not … their transition, but my transition as a parent, going from ignorance and denial to complete unconditional love and acceptance, and I think there’s a lot of parents out there who need to have that message, and I know I’m dealing with it.”

Marlon Wayans accepts his son for who they are. Although he admits he struggles with using the correct pronouns and that he has experienced something of a learning curve with understanding his son, he accepts and acknowledges Kai for their identity, with no judgement.
