Lil Nas X is already sweeping the 2021 VMAs with his queer anthem “Call Me By Your Name (Montero)” with some categories still yet to be announced! The 22-year-old artist known for his boundary pushing music videos and online antics has garnered five nominations, putting him on par with huge industry names like Billie Eilish, BTS, and Drake.
Nas himself is up for Video of the Year, Video for Good, and Best Direction, and still awaits the list of nominees for the lucrative Song of the Summer award, which he’s rumored to be highly considered for. His team has been nominated for Best Art Directing and Best Visual Effects for their roles in the “Call Me By Your Name“ video, a stunning piece of art work no viewer could ever forget. I personally think about the pole-ride-to-hell scene on the daily, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
Nas has become one of the biggest LGBTQ stars in the music industry today. Since his rise to fame in 2019 for his record-smashing song “Old Town Road,” the rapper-singer has come into his own as an authentically queer, young Black man. His fashion, lyrics and cinematography are shaking up the über-straight rap world, and not everyone’s a fan—but Nas couldn’t care less.
He mercilessly takes aim at homophobes on Twitter who claim his music is “inappropriate,” “pushing an agenda,”or even “Satanic.” The trolls may strike first, but Nas strikes back harder. If you’re looking to see some Bible-thumping bigots get absolutely torn to shreds, might I refer you to Lil Nas X’s Twitter feed? It’s pure, unadulterated entertainment. Nas won’t be the only artist representing the LGBTQ community on the VMAs stage. He’ll be joined by fellow Video of the Year nominee Megan Thee Stallion, the bisexual stunner featured on Cardi B’s “WAP” track, and Girl in Red, a pillar artist of the women-loving-women community who’s receiving her first VMA nomination for Push Performance of the Year.
Tune in to the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards live from the Barclays Center in New York on Sunday, September 12 to cheer on all your favorite queer artists.
