LGBTQ Rights Discussion With John Hickenlooper, Senator Tammy Baldwin, and State Representatives

Hickenlooper

Monday, October 26, One Colorado helped organize a discussion with John Hickenlooper, Senator Tammy Baldwin, Representative DeGatte, and State Representative Esgar to discuss the state of LGBTQ rights in the upcoming election, and the Supreme Court nominee. The link is posted here.

Senator Tammy Baldwin began by thanking viewers for attending the livestream, and urging them to vote. Then moved on to the announcement of Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s Supreme Court nomination. “Barack Obama made a Supreme Court nomination before election year. Senator Mitch McConnell used the words, ‘improper,’ and ‘wrong,’ to bring a Supreme Court nomination this close to an election. The notion was stalled until former President Barack Obamas term was completed in 2016,” says Senator Baldwin.

Hickenlooper’s statement about the recent Supreme Court Judge appointee Amy Coney Barrett, “Cory Gardner has been trying to get rid of protections for preexisting conditions for more than a decade, and this vote is just his latest attempt to do so. With health care on the ballot, we have eight days to make sure that Coloradans have their voices heard. Vote, Vote, Vote!”

May 20, 2019 the Equality Act was passed in the house. In short the Act states that, “sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, childbirth, pregnancy, or a related medical condition.” The Equality Act awaits approval of the U.S. Senate.

“The Affordable Care Act, and the Equality act will be renounced if President Trump is reelected. Which means people with preexisting conditions like diabetes will not have access to health care. COVID 19 will be a preexisting condition,” says Representative DeGatte. There are eight days left until the presidential election, in person voting ends at 7:00 pm November 3rd.

“There are 5.6 million people in Colorado, and 1.6 million have voted early,” says Hickenlooper.

“I’m surprised the word hypocrisy isn’t being used more.” Governor Hickenlooper explains, “The value in your words. Saying what you believe at the time, and sticking through with it. Decisions are based on convince. This is something I really want to be an ally with Senator Baldwin. Rebuild these bridges. Have everyone in the senate talk and debate issues with long term impact.”

” Its a cold day across Colorado. Its a good day to cozy up next to the telephone and make phone calls. We can change the direction of this country,” says Hickenlooper.
