LGBTQ-Friendly Vaccine Pop-Up To Be Held in May

One Colorado, Denver Public Health, and The Center on Colfax are teaming up to provide an LGBTQ-friendly vaccine pop-up on May 15. The goal is to provide those in the LGBTQ community a safe space to receive their vaccine doses.

Historically, medical spaces have been hostile to queer individuals, but this pop-up is designed specifically as a safe space for those in the community.

The pop-up will take place at The Center on Colfax and will be followed by a second one on June 18 in order to administer the second shot. You can register online here.

So far, more than 56 percent of adults in America have received one dose of the vaccine. President Biden recently announced that his goal is to increase that number to 70 percent by July 4. However, while the vaccine rollout has been going quicker than planned, there are signs of it slowing down, not because of lack of supply, but because of hesitancy by many adults in the U.S.

In a CNN poll conducted in April, 26 percent of adults in America said that they won’t take the COVID-19 vaccine. Currently, medical experts in the U.S predict that the U.S won’t be able to reach the goal of herd immunity that has been talked about as an ending point of this pandemic since it’s beginning. With less people vaccinated, strains of COVID-19 can infect more people, mutating in the process and becoming more infectious. Scientists now believe that the vaccine will lower the rate of infections, and therefore deaths, but COVID-19 will continue to spread for years to come.

It’s important for everyone who is eligible to receive the vaccine, as it has repeatedly shown to be safe and is pivotal for ending this pandemic and preventing deaths. The decision to not get one does not only affect one person, but the entire country.
