Kevin Stitt Won’t Accept that Nonbinary People Exist

Kevin Stitt, the Republican Governor of Oklahoma, can’t seem to accept that nonbinary people exist.

Dr. Lance Frye, Oklahoma’s Health Commissioner, recently issued his first nonbinary birth certificate to Kit Lorelied, an Oklahoma native who now resides in Oregon.

“I know I am the first,” says Lorelied, referring to themself as the first person from Oklahoma to receive a new birth certificate with the nonbinary gender marker, “but all that means to me is that I am opening the door for others to feel a little more at home in their skin. All we want is the same respect and dignity that every citizen is supposed to have. As for Governor Stitt, I am not at all surprised. His administration has consistently been antagonistic to the LGBTQIA+ community, but he is on the wrong side of history.”

Lorelied isn’t wrong. It’s not simply Stitt’s reign that has proven itself bigoted over and over again, but Oklahoma as a state has long-since proven itself unsafe for those in the LGBTQ community.

“I believe that people are created by God to be male or female. Period,” says Stitt, referring to his most recent ban. “There is no such thing as non-binary sex and I wholeheartedly condemn the purported OSDH court settlement that was entered into by rogue activists who acted without receiving proper approval or oversight.”

Dr. Frye released a statement as well, implying that he would stay on to ensure the rights and safety of nonbinary Oklahoma natives. “Should a challenge to the previous agreement be made, we will proceed accordingly,” he says. However, the following day, directly following his own statement, Dr. Frye resigned without explanation or warning.

While it’s no secret that discrimination against nonbinary people is widespread, why would Governor Stitt care? After all, he has more important things to worry about, like a shortage of sauce at his local Chick-fil-A.
