Kate Moennig Does Denver

When I text my roommate Sara for the scoop on Katherine Moennig, I feel a gay-lesbian chasm cracking open beneath my feet, threatening any claim I might have to queer-cultural capital with an implicit, “Where the hell have you been?”
“Shane from The L Word,” she snaps back. “Either you wanted to be her character, or you wanted to f*ck her character.” Moments later, my friend Rose chimes in with, “She’s untouchable, which makes us all want her. Every lesbian wants to be the one who ties her down.”
Whether or not anyone can successfully woo Moennig, Denver ladies will very soon have a chance to see the ever-eligible, effortlessly stunning goddess-girl next door in the flesh when she comes to town for Girl Pride on Saturday, June 18. OUT FRONT sat down with event-organizer DJ Tatiana to hear more.
How is Girl Pride different from other events at PrideFest?
I’ve always tried to go bigger and to challenge myself. I have a huge love for the Denver community; this is home. I’ve been producing events for 10 years, and I want to make them better each year. As a lesbian, it’s important to bring strong female talent into the city, and I think this will be one of my best events.
How did you mange to get so much hotness in one place?
This is our 8th annual Girl Pride. We were lucky to have local talent for many of our first years, but now we’re able to bring in bigger names. We’re a city that deserves the best, so why not?
In previous years, we brought in folks from The Real L-Word as well as Big Boo from Orange is the New Black. I always wanted to bring Katie Moennig because she is the biggest star I could imagine. Lesbians know her from all around the world.
Why are lesbians so in love with her?
There is no bigger sex-symbol for lesbians. She was cast in a role that played out the intricacies of being a lesbian, the hottest chick that gets all the girls she wants. A lot of girls came out because of Shane — she is the ultimate icon. Promoter friends of mine have said, “You have the mother ship,” and I’m so excited that Denver is a pioneer in hosting her.

Sounds like she’s tough to book.
It’s been difficult to get her, but finally I was able to get through and negotiate her. She is always shooting for television, so it’s a little difficult to squeeze events in, and she actually started deejaying not so long ago.
What will Katie Moennig be performing at Girl Pride?
Kate Moennig will be doing a one-hour set at primetime. Every lesbian will be bummed if they don’t come. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to spend a night with someone special.
Who else will be gracing the stage?
We have Madison Paige, a model and singer. She is dedicating more of her time currently to singing, having just headlined for the Dinah, [a Palm Springs lesbian music festival], and she killed it. She is fabulous and a great addition. Kennedy Grace is a lesbian blogger coming from LA, and we are very very lucky to have her hosting. DJ Leslie Van Stelton is coming to us from NYC. She has done a lot of the lesbian clubs in NY. She’s a good friend with a great look, and she kills it on the deck. In addition, we will be working with local talent — DJs, comediennes, and acoustic sets — to open up the night and set the stage.
Who’s invited?
The event is 18+, so it’s not only for 21+. I remember when I was 18 and 19, I wanted to enjoy the things other people were enjoying, to feel a part of the community, so I strive to make my events open. This is a huge deal for our community and our city. People should know they have the opportunity to see her if they want to.
This event is not only for women. It’s geared to the lesbian and bisexual women community, but all transgender, gay, and straight allies are welcome to come and have a great time. My goals are that it’s something fun, something great where everyone is welcome and everyone is happy.
Girl Pride 2016 is Saturday, June 18, 9pm. Doors open at 8pm. Get your tickets online or at the Ogden Theater box office (935 E Colfax). In-person ticket purchases are discounted.
