JUST WATCH: ‘The Saint of Dry Creek’
There’s no disputing that being a sissy at a young age these days is a lot simpler than being a young sissy in the 1950s.
My generation, and the generations of young queers that follow me, have had it easy. We grew up with Jack from Will and Grace, or Kurt from Glee proudly displaying their sissiness to the world. Our parents, for the most part, are more understanding. And acceptance is spewed from nearly every media outlet. This has transformed the way young queers see the world. We see it as an mostly accepting place, with exceptions of course.
The same can not be said for the sissies growing up in the 1950s. But, just as it is now, there are exceptions to the norm. Last month, StoryCorps, an online media outlet releasing short conversations of people sharing their most intimate, funny, sad, and inspiring moments in life with one another, released “The Saint of Dry Creek” about a sissy in the late 1950s, and how is father gave him the best advice ever. Advice all of us could learn from, sissy or not.
