Just Watch: Straight Fathers with Gay Sons Read “I Think I’m A Poof”

Coming out is never easy. I know because it gave me severe anxiety, and high levels of stress for several years before I even uttered the words out loud. In this video three Australian dads with gay sons read from a new book titled, “I Think I’m A Poof.” from author Samuel Leighton-Dore, and talk about their experiences with their own gay sons. The best part of this video is that one of these men also happens to be Samuel’s father.

In the video, Leighton-Dore’s father says of his son’s coming out: “It was so significant for him, but what’s remarkable is how insignificant an announcement it was for me.”

“I Think I’m A Poof” is a silly story about a young boy coming out to his father, and the advice and encouragement his father gives in response. It starts by saying that in beginning times might be hard, and that kids might not be nice. But it then goes on to say life gets better…

“Traditionally fairytales typecast heroes and villains, so I mindfully followed that more conventional structure; making the bullies our villains, and the young gay man our hero,” said Samuel in an interview.

A percentage of all profits made from “I Think I’m A Poof” will be donated to local LGBT charities.

“It’s so important that there are a range of characters and protagonists for young people to identify and relate to,” Samuel said. And we agree.
