Jojo Siwa Celebrates One Year of Being Openly Queer

Everyone’s favorite dancer, singer, and YouTube and internet personality shared a heartfelt message on Instagram last week. Jojo Siwa, who publicly announced one year ago that she’s queer, took to the photo and video platform to remark on the last 365 days of being the most herself she’s ever felt.

“In the last 365 days, I’ve felt more love than ever,” writes Siwa, who shared several photos in the post, including the original Twitter photo from a year ago as well as her subsequent cover for People magazine.

“I get asked a lot, ‘Was coming out scary for you’… and the answer is, yes of course; anything that’s different about you is scary, however… it’s what makes me … me,” the starlet says, honing in on the importance of authenticity, acceptance, and love.

Naturally, many outlets like AutoStraddle jumped on coverage of the post, reminiscing about the year Siwa’s had since coming out, which has been eventful, to say the least. Siwa’s post garnered national attention, media coverage, and even more opportunities for screen time, including being one-half of the first same-gender partnership on the hit show Dancing with the Stars.

It remains pretty evident that the 18-year-old star will continue to unapologetically break barriers, too—a huge reason for her massive following. “Please never forget that no matter who you are, what you look like, who you LOVE, that you are absolutely perfect,” Siwa writes in her recent post. She goes on to attribute most of her positive experiences in the last 365 days to her dedicated fan base. “Thank you for showing me the most love throughout this year and throughout my entire life. I love you all.”
