Jennifer Holliday joins Denver Gay Men’s Chorus Neon Lights

Grammy award winner Jennifer Holliday joined Denver’s Gay Men’s Chorus for Neon Lights as a tribute to Broadway in the spring of 2024. The performance was a fun experience for guests and a passionate show of LGBTQ+ support for the community that included dazzling music and inspiring stories from and about thequeer community.

The show gained an audience of about 150 or more. The name “Neon Lights” refers to a show on Broadway called Smokey Joe’s Cafe. The chorus states that the songs they chose were examples that broadcast the LGBTQ+ experience. Music is one of the most intimate and creative ways to showcase the queer community and the unique struggles we face.

This year will be the sixth year the Gay Men’s Chorus has performed in Denver at the Ellie Caulksin Opera House. Denver’s Gay Men’s Chorus has always shown inspiring dedication to the community and has been loved and commended for each performance. The DGMC has even been invited to perform outside of the country on occasion. The group was established in 1982, and their goal is to inspire and empower others and to build tolerance through Colorado. The DGMC is one of the first to be a part of Disney’s PRIDE for a musical celebration.

Best known for her role as Effie Melody in Dreamgirls, this was not Holiday’s only time showing support for the LGBTQ+ community through song and performance. She has also performed with the Gay Men’s Chorus Los Angeles in June of 2009, as well as joining the Washington DC Gay Men’s Chorus in 2010, almost a decade ago. Showcasing her unyielding support for the LGBTQ community throughout the years, Holiday has been a big ally. Having been one of the most loyal and vocal allies in Hollywood, her support continues today. Always willing to shed light onto LGBTQ music talent, it’s no surprise that she lent her talents once again in Denver.
