Italian Activists Arrested for Same-Sex Kissing

In March, an anti-gay march was winding its way through Perugia, a central Italian city, when pro-LGBT activists shared a same-sex kiss in protest. Six of these activists were arrested for disturbing the peace.

The anti-gay group is called Sentinelle in Piedi, Standing Sentries, and their activities mainly include standing in silence to raise support against same-sex marriage and extending hate crime protections for LGBT people.

Though same-sex public affection is not illegal in Italy, the charges state the same-sex couples were prolonging their passion in front of children and families, creating probable cause for disturbing the peace and unlawful demonstration.

These and similar “peaceful fights” are escalating due to the increasing debate regarding same-sex marriage and civil unions escalates.
