… but excludes protections for LGBT community.
This, according to news out of The Huffington Post.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence says he’ll now back an amendment to his state RFRA law barring businesses to deny service to people for religious reasons. He insists he never intended to discriminate against the LGBT community and finds the notion that we ever thought so “offensive.”
I quote:
“I don’t believe for a minute that it was the intention of the General Assembly to create a license to discriminate, or a right to deny services to gays, lesbians, or anyone else in this state, and it certainly wasn’t my intent. But I can appreciate that that’s become the impression — not just here in Indiana, but all across this country. And we need to confront that.”
HOWEVER, in confronting that, he adds that he does not support adding protections explicitly barring discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.
(So … us.)
Where would we get the patently offensive notion that he didn’t mean to discriminate? Oh. From his discrimination.
I quote:
“I never supported [LGBT protections]. I want to be clear. It is not on my agenda.”
So what do his amendment recommendations call for? Not being able to deny people on the basis of their race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, or disability.
But by all means: Feel free to turn away the gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders. Good work, man.
Thanks so much.
