Top-notch performer, entertainer and beloved celebrity impersonator and vocal impressionist Jimmy James is nothing short of a cunning stage artist. This transformation diva has bedazzled audiences across the nation. His next stop is Lannie’s Clocktower in Denver. James is a classic Gemini putting his multi-personality skills to work while audiences roar for encores of his impressive talents. And, James isn’t scared to label himself a professional schizophrenic.
From impersonating the legendary Diana Ross to Cher, Barbara Streisand and even hippie favorite, Stevie Nicks, James’ talents are so diverse that the audience can’t wait to see what he has in store next.
And now, back by popular demand, James’ returns to Denver with a performance at 8 p.m. Friday, July 1, at Lannie’s Clocktower, 16th Street Mall and Arapahoe Street. A favorite at Lannie’s Clocktower venue, James lets OFC readers in on why he’s excited to be back.
“I’m always excited and proud of Lannie and Jefferson for the success they’ve made of this beautiful show room,” he said. “It’s a perfect room for me to play. My Denver audiences have always been mixed with gay, straight, young, mature … I feel very lucky to have that diversity there.”
Reminiscing on memories of past visits to Denver, James revealed that in 1992 actress Barbara Hale flew him to Denver to pop out of a cake, as Marilyn Monroe (on the set of film Ironside) to surprise Raymond Burr for his birthday. “Scott Baio was filming on that episode and disappeared. I think there was too much gayness on the set for him at that time,” James said.
After performing for 27 years, this stage diva has drawn from his favorite entertainers to write his material. He isn’t ashamed to admit that he steals from Lady Bunny, Red Skeleton and yes, even Captain Kangaroo.
Aside from James’ ability to become a plethora of different Hollywood starlets, he said that he even does his own makeup. “I’m a skilled makeup artist,” he said. “I’ve never had anyone do my makeup better than I do it.” And the transformation becomes that much more impressive.
Unlike many Hollywood performers, James isn’t afraid to strut his or “her” stuff outside of his performances. And humor, well that just comes naturally for this diva. “I walk around in high heels as often as possible. I go out everyday in drag and try to pick up politicians because they’re the easiest targets,” joked James. “I was trying to get Congressman Anthony Weiner (from New York) because he’s got such a big one, but unfortunately he also has a face to protect it.”
And then, there was Cher. Every drag queen and impersonators’ dream. James admits that he worships Cher and aside from being himself, Cher is his favorite impersonation. “She never let me down. The world is going to end soon, but Cher will still be alive.”
In order to fully grasp all of the personas James embodies, you simply have to see it to believe it. His goal is to make the audience feel a rainbow of emotions. “I love and respect good songs. If I can make you laugh and cry, I’ve done a good job,” James said. “I have passion, heart and soul for my work.”
