“Anyone they could have got their hands on, they would have killed,” said Impeachment Manager, Delegate to United States House of Representatives, Stacy Plaskett.
On the second day of former President Trump’s impeachment trial, House Managers showed never before seen security camera footage taken during the Capitol riots on January 6th. The managers also referenced several social media posts made in real-time by the insurrectionists, with clear intentions of bringing bodily harm to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, and other Senators.
Impeachment Manager, Plaskett details how the mob systematically invaded the capital and sought out Speaker Pelosi. The video provided shows rioters throwing themselves bodily against a door where Pelosi’s staffers were sheltered in place. A phone call recorded from that time depicts one staffer requesting capitol police, as the sound of banging can be heard in the background.
“That was very powerful,” Republican Sen. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, said of the evidence. “Now obviously we’re going to hear some more. But again, very powerful.”
Senators from both parties, most of whom were present during the attack in question, were rapt as the video played. However, most Republicans are excepted to side with Trump and vote to acquit.
“Well from the start I’ve said…I think it’s a bad precedent to be convicting former presidents, private citizens,” Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, told reporters. “So that’s, I’m considering that as, you know, as I listen. I’m listening, I’m a juror.”
Impeachment managers argued that Trump did nothing to put a stop to the riot as it unfolded. By not calling off his voters, condemning the violence, nor calling in the national guard. “The truth is he didn’t want them to stop,” Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas. “He wanted them to stay and fight the certification” of the election.
Among the mounting new evidence were videos of both former Vice President Mike Pence and Senator Mit Romney separately being escorted quickly from the capital as the mob of rioters was startlingly close by.
The managers claimed Trump had begun instigating violence months earlier, during the start of the 2020 election, when he told voters, should he lose it would be because the election was stolen from them.
Rep. Madeleine Dean, D-Pa., another impeachment manager, choked up as she concluded her presentation. “This was clearly not just some march or rally or protest. This was about Donald Trump trying to steal the election for himself,” Dean said. “This attack never would have happened were it not for Donald Trump.”
