Hillary Clinton calls for an end to HIV criminalization
Hillary Clinton, the woman currently running against Bernie Sanders for a spot on the presidential ballot in November against Donald Trump, addressed the attendees of the HIV is Not a Crime Training Academy via a pre-recorded video, in which she thanked attendees for their hard work and vowed to reform antiquated HIV criminalization laws if she wins the presidential race.
“This issue matters deeply to me,” she began, “and I’ve always tried to do my part in the fight against this epidemic.”
In the video she talks about the early days of the epidemic and how medicine and awareness has come a long way. But, she also recognizes that the stigma, cost, and prevention tactics are still far from receiving the attention they deserve saying, “we still have a long way to go.”
She hit all the basics including how the disease disproportionately affects “communities of color, transgender people, gay and bisexual men and young people, around the world.”
Now, before you go off about her remarks about Nancy Raegan and how she falsely praised them for the work they did (or didn’t do) to combat HIV/AIDS, we have to look at the bigger picture. HIV is being talked about, and is being pushed to the forefront of people’s minds once again. And regardless of how informed she is on the advocates who helped spread awareness and the ones who silently tried to sweep it under the rug, Hillary is trying to make a change that we can all get behind.
