As we know, Denver boasts a massive Orville Peck fan base. His music and enigmatic image fit perfectly with Colorado’s cowboy legacy, the sweeping landscapes of country music, and the vibrant queerness of the Mile High City. On Sunday, November 1, Peck will take the stage at the Mission Ballroom at 7:00 p.m. as part of his Man Turned Mule Tour, supporting his most recent and perhaps most poignant album to date, Mule. There is no better way to wrap up Halloween weekend than by joining Orville for this one-night event; a celebration of the challenging journey of mental health, recovery, and healing explored in his latest work.

Mule: A Testament to Addiction, Recovery, and Growth
Mule is a deeply vulnerable and honest album, particularly for listeners navigating addiction, substance use, and mental health challenges. Rarely are we gifted such raw depictions of recovery shared from a place of success and growth. The album serves as a trophy of accomplishment, marking Peck’s journey to the other side of addiction and the painful process of unravelling the complex web that substance use and mental health struggles create.
Orville Peck is not downplaying the role his own mental health played in the creation of this album. In a tangible effort to give back, one dollar from every ticket sold on the Man Turned Mule Tour will be donated to The Trevor Project, supporting their vital mission to provide crisis intervention and suicide prevention services for LGBTQ+ young people.

“I always try to be vulnerable, but with Mule I tried to be as blatant as I could about what I was going through and not present that in metaphors… I wanted to call it what it is.” Orville says Peck to Playgirl
Critical Acclaim and Complex Harmony
Rolling Stone recently called Mule “his best, most realized album yet,” a sentiment I wholeheartedly share. The album masterfully weaves together the hope of healing with the reflective shame of the destructive path addiction leaves in its wake. Mule is complex and multifaceted. Its tracks contradict and affirm one another in a harmony that mirrors the recovery process itself; laborious, messy, yet ultimately beautiful.

Community Leadership and the Roadmap to Healing
In many regards, this album establishes Peck as a leader and role model within the queer community, especially for those living with substance abuse. As previously explored in my column, HELLO HOMO, the interviews with Big Brother/RuPaul’s Drag Race star and sobriety advocate Salina EsTitties and addiction psychiatrist Dr. Carl Eric Fisher emphasize how addiction and recovery are deeply woven into the history and culture of LGBTQ+ communities.
Queer audiences are often hungry for the level of brutal honesty Peck provides. By offering his personal experience as a roadmap, Peck helps others identify their own struggles and seek a path toward healing. His list of recent successes including; a run on Broadway in Cabaret, starring in the box office hit Street Fighter, and releasing two acclaimed albums, illuminates the immense potential of life on the other side of a mental health crisis.
In the melodic track “War of the Worlds,“ Peck reflects on this journey: “So hats off to those who have made it, Hats on to those in the rain. Just don’t bump my hat when you’re tryna get back, To the place that I’m tryna remain.”

Those who have “made it” certainly deserve their flowers, but just the same, those currently struggling deserve our respect and support. Within the LGBTQ+ community, we can coexist through both our challenges and our successes.
