Four-time Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy has announced his engagement to his partner, Australian finance executive Andrew Rigby, following a meticulously planned proposal off the coast of Mallorca, Spain. The 34-year-old silver medalist shared the news after pulling off a clifftop surprise on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, wrapping up a month of secret preparations alongside a local travel team.
The romantic getaway took place while the couple were vacationing in the Balearic Islands. Kenworthy initiated the secret plan during an afternoon outing at their hotel, leading Rigby on what seemed to be an impromptu coastal excursion.
“We took a private dinghy from the pier at the St. Regis where we were having a cocktail by the beach at the Mar Sea Club. I told Andrew I was taking him on a little adventure. Once we got to the island we climbed off the dinghy and hiked up to the top of the cliffs,” Kenworthy says.
Upon reaching the summit of the island of Torre de ses Illetes, Rigby was met with a personalized clifftop setup.
“I organized for a picnic blanket to be waiting for us with a pitcher of margaritas — extra sweet because that’s how Andrew orders them,” Kenworthy adds. “After the proposal, we got back on the dinghy—but instead of going back to the mainland, it took us out to a chartered boat.”
Waiting aboard the larger vessel were six of the couple’s close friends, who had secretly traveled to Spain to join the post-engagement celebration. Rigby admitted that despite prior discussions about marriage, the elaborate getaway proposal caught him entirely off guard.
“We’ve talked about this a lot obviously, but I thought this was just a relaxing vacation,” Rigby says. “To say I was shocked was an understatement. And then to see our friends there immediately after Gus proposed? Wow.”
The couple commemorated the moment with matching Cartier 1895 bands, with Kenworthy selecting a traditional yellow gold ring and Rigby opting for platinum. On social media, Kenworthy posted photos of himself down on one knee, jokingly claiming “He said he’d think about it!”
The engagement marks a milestone for the pair, whose relationship spans multiple continents and milestones. The two first crossed paths nearly 10 years ago in Sydney while Kenworthy was visiting Australia for a speaking engagement, though they did not begin dating until reconnecting at a friend’s 40th birthday celebration in Guadalajara, Mexico, in March 2024. After managing a year-long, cross-Pacific relationship between Los Angeles and Sydney, the couple moved into a home together in New York City.
Rigby previously supported Kenworthy during his return to Olympic competition at the 2026 Winter Games, where the skier represented Team Great Britain following a brief retirement. With their engagement now official, the couple plans to celebrate with family and friends before commencing wedding plans.
