Got Milk? The Rocky Mountain Arts Association Has You Covered
By Noah L. Jordan
This summer, the spirit of Harvey Milk will make his Denver musical debut as the Rocky Mountain Arts Association and the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus present the regional premiere of “I Am Harvey Milk,” written by Broadway veteran Andrew Lippa. The concert musical celebrates the life and legacy of one of history’s greatest gay icons during the gay-rights movement. Harvey Milk was the first openly gay elected official in our country, after all. Showcased across the country, “I Am Harvey Milk” has already received critical acclaim, being called “an electrifying experience of music, theater, and pride”and “full of Broadway verve and pizzazz.”
James Knapp, director of the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus and conductor of the show, said in an earlier interview: “One of our main responsibilities as gay people is to share our history and to tell our individual stories. If we don’t, who will? 1978 was a pivotal year in the gay-rights movement, and a lot of that had to do with Harvey Milk, his election, his politics, and his murder. That lesson needs to be passed on.”
After the show, the merry male singers will continue the evening with a rousing tribute to our musically gifted and always-loyal female icons. You know, like the one who told the world we were “Born This Way.” And the one who, despite it being a “Woman’s World,” still had love for us.
We’re certain that our very own Denver Gay Men’s Chorus will bring the high level of infotainment we’ve grown accustomed to when they present “I Am Harvey Milk.” The show comes to Denver on June 12 at the University of Denver Campus in Denver.
Got tickets? Excellent. See you there.
