Google Donates Large Amount to Transformative Freedom Fund
For Pride Month this year, Google.org, in partnership with Google Boulder, has provided a $10,000 grant to the Transformative Freedom Fund, a Denver-based nonprofit that supports the authentic selves of transgender Coloradans by removing financial barriers to transition-related healthcare.
With Google’s support, the Transformative Freedom Fund has approved funding for 12 transgender individuals to receive care, including gender-affirming surgeries, access to hormones, electrolysis, and facial feminization surgeries, which are not currently covered under any insurance plan in Colorado.
The interest in the Transformative Freedom Fund came from local, LGBTQ employees. Google.org wanted to honor Pride by focusing on organizations that work every day to help the queer community, and the Transformative Freedom Fund proved to be a favorite of the Boulder group.
According to an article in 2019 for OUT FRONT, the founders of the fund see the Transformative Freedom Fund potentially progressing toward avenues of advocacy beyond removing financial barriers. Like any good nonprofit, their ideal situation is a healthcare system in the United States that supports transgender and gender-nonconforming people’s health needs to the point that the TFF is irrelevant.
In addition to the grant to the Transformative Freedom Fund, Google continues to work towards demonstrating its commitment to supporting the LGBTQ community through several other initiatives. This year, Google.org gave over two million to LGBTQ organizations around the world, along with over 3 million to The Trevor Project.
Google joined with other companies to file an amicus brief in support of LGBTQ employment discrimination protections and advocate for the passage of the Equality Act. While the donation to the Transformative Freedom Fund was a one-time donation, Google vows to continue to support the Denver LGBTQ community through participation in Denver Pride and other volunteer opportunities.
Google continues to offer support and benefits to its employees while also standing up for the broader community outside of the company.
