Georgia has Elected its First Non-Monogamous Councilor
Atlanta, Georgia has elected their first Muslim, non-monogamous, and nonbinary city councilor. Liliana Bakhtiari, who uses they/she pronouns, introduced the world to their partners, Kris Brown, whom they’ve been dating for 10 years, and Sarah Al-Khayyal. The latter became a part of the relationship in 2020.
Non-monogamy is incredibly stigmatized in media and the public eye, with many demonizing it. Bakhtiari aims to destigmatize and normalize it, stating to Them, “As a public figure, one’s personal life often becomes news—especially when it refuses to abide by traditional structures and expectations. As the three of us move towards building a family, it was important that we claim our relationship proudly and publicly. I am a better public servant for having Kris and Sarah at my side.”
Liliana Bakhtiari is the child of Iranian immigrants who moved to Georgia and owned a pharmacy. Understandably, she stands with the women of Iran as they fight for human rights and justice. “This is about demanding justice for Mahsa Amini and standing in solidarity with the many brave women of Iran. This systemic persecution of women must end. We want to shine a light on this repression and proudly support human rights in Iran and across the world,” says Bakhtiari.
Most recently, Bakhtiari was spotted at Atlanta Pride with their partners, in a post captioned “Happy Pride Atlanta! I am so glad we are back and that we got to celebrate with all of you. #atlpride”
Bakhtiari’s campaign focused on human rights and economical issues, such as the rising housing market, homelessness, and senior citizen’s issues. Liliana Bakhtiari previously worked as the public affairs manager of Planned Parenthood Southeast. They served as a consultant for Echo Market Research as they built out their Social Justice Division. She also collaborated with Partners for Home to create a suitable hotel program housing Atlanta’s at-risk homeless population during the COVID-19 pandemic.
