George R. R. Martin and the issue of gay sex in A Song of Ice and Fire

George R. R. Martin, author of the popular series A Song of Ice and Fire (or Game of Thrones for the TV viewers) addressed the gay sex debacle raised by fans of the books.
While the books describe sex between heterosexual and lesbian characters, many readers find themselves wanting to read about sex between two male characters. Martin says he’s received many letters, the majority from women, asking for an explicit gay sex scene. The books certainly allude to gay characters such as the ones who have sex in the television show, however they are not point of view characters, something Martin points out.
“Frankly, it is the way I prefer to write fiction because that is the way all of us experience life. You’re seeing me from your viewpoint, you’re not seeing what someone over here is seeing,” said Martin. “I’m not going to do it just for the sake of doing it. If the plot lends itself to that — if one of my viewpoint characters is in a situation, then I’m not going to shy away from it — but you can’t just insert things because everyone wants to see them.”
