Gays Against Groomers Sue Colorado for Pro-Trans Bill.

With the new bill Tiara’s Law, named after Tiara Latrice Kelly, we move closer to helping remove barriers to trans-affirmation care.

Colorado General Assembly states that “The bill authorizes the court to require a petitioner to give public notice of a name change if the name change was requested by a petitioner with a felony conviction and is for the purpose of changing the petitioner’s name to conform with the petitioner’s gender identity.”

But the passing of the bill in the Senate has caught many people’s attention, including far-right anti-trans group Gays Against Groomers. The group, abbreviated to GAG, is an American right-wing organization that actively campaigns against gender-affirming care for minors, LGBTQ subjects in school curriculums, and drag queen story hour events. Gays Against Groomers has also been promoted and employed by other right-winged companies and media outlets. They have also organized an anti-LGBTQ+ rally in Florida alongside Mom’s For Liberty and Proud Boys.

The group recently joined the lawsuit with Rocky Mountain Women’s Network, a sex-based women’s rights activist group who are vocal against transgender women, aligning themselves with TERF ideology. The definition of TERF is trans-exclusive radical feminists, and their views are based on the lie that trans people are a threat to cis women, turning their feminism and twisting it into an excuse to promote transphobia.

Both parties are represented by the Institute for Free Speech, speaking against the bill and claiming it takes away their freedom of speech regarding how they refer to individuals during public testimony. Christina Geoke, of the Rocky Mountain Women’s Network that testified in the suit, tweets that:

In the video, she says “Are you going to tell me I cannot speak truthfully now? I must lie to speak? I will not tell a lie; a man is a man.” After this, she was interrupted during her testimony, as she was referring to Tiara as their deadname. After being given several warnings, Goeke and Rich Guggenheim’s (GAG’s representative) testimony was cut short.

Trans women are still women. Tiara’s Law passed with an 8 to 1 ratio in the Senate hearing, a major accomplishment for the transgender community.
