The First Same-Sex Marriage in a Mennonite Church
Mennonites and marriage? Mennonites and marriage. It seems the acceptance of gay marriage is spreading like wild fire, and not just in the United States. On New Year’s Eve, Craig Friesen and Matt Wiens were the first same-sex couple to be married in their faith in Osler Mennonite Church in Canada.
While same-sex marriage has been legal in Canada since July of 2005, the Mennonite church in Saskatchewan province gave the option to individual churches as of last year. Well as soon as Osler Mennonite Church gave the all clear, Craig and Matt were racing down the aisle! They hope their marriage and churches acceptance will be an example for others down the line.
On a national level, the Canadian Mennonite Church still opposes same-sex marriage despite the church in Saskatchewan allowing congregations to set their own position. But here’s hoping these two little gays made an impact.
