First Friday Art Show ‘Voices’ to Open This Week
After a long year of virtual art shows and events, Denver’s art scene is coming alive again with the new, women-led art show “Voices,” premiering today at First Friday, May 7.
The show features nine artists (Virginia T. Coleman, Sue Crosby Doyle, Denise Demby, Gay Germain, Ulla Meyer, Kathryn Oberdorfer, Phyllis Rider, Tracey Russell, and Kristy Smith) who will show sculptures, abstract pieces, and mixed media. Though the opening reception begins Friday evening, the show will run until June 11, 2021, giving Denver art lovers plenty of time to experience the art.
Gay Germain, whose works include paintings and sculptures, will be showing her sculpture series Knots and Lines at the gallery, among other works. In the series, Germain uses bendable wood to convey nature and playfulness to the viewer. “Working this way brings to life a new process. Sculpture brings 20 years of studies off of the canvas into a three dimensional world. While the possibilities and fascination that drawing and painting present, this newly found process and material overwhelm me with unlimited potential and curiosities,” she states.
Also showing work in “Voices” is Phyllis Rider, who takes inspiration from traveling as well as her home state of Colorado to create her abstract paintings. “The combination of organic and geometric lines in my pieces are often influenced by symbols and icons I find in my travels—for me that’s when something very creative is unleashed. My work is a mix of carefully-studied technique and the magic that happens when something spontaneous occurs in the studio,” Rider says.
To experience these artists’ works and more in person, head over to the 931 Gallery in the Creative Arts Design Center (931 Santa Fe Drive, Suite 150, Denver, CO, 80204) on Friday, May 7. The private collector’s reception is from 5-6 p.m., and the general reception runs until 9:00 p.m. Social distancing and masks will be required at the gallery.
