Fashion: Dressing for the occasion

made-to-measure fitted suit

Step out in style, or don’t step out at all.

That’s the thinking – or should be, anyway – behind planning an outfit for a social event. I’m not just talking about a night out on the Mile High town. (Although you should dress stylishly then, too). Instead, I’m referring to fundraising events, fashion shows, foodie get-togethers and other mingle fests where you might find yourself. And while fashion certainly varies from coast to coast, there are certain do’s and don’ts when it comes to dressing the part.

Step and repeat:

A Great Pair of Shoes

Remember that shoes make the outfit. For the girls, a stylish pair of stilettos will make you feel sexy (every time), and you can’t go wrong with Kate Middleton’s trendsetting patent-leather heels in nude. Meanwhile, guys will bring style to the street in a pair of leather dress shoes. Yes, even a pair of purple suede loafers can step things up a notch if donned the right way.

A Great Watch

As one of the few accessories for men, a watch is the perfect way to show some personal style and bring some bling to your look. While the gals may have other options for adding sparkle, a high-quality watch will always make a stylish statement.

A Great Statement Piece

While you’re busy making that fashion statement, make sure it’s a good one. Guys can say it right with something like a scarf or hat, while the ladies can say it with a chunky necklace or miniaudière.

A Great Suit

Bespoke clothing says refined. Enough said.

A Great Smile

A smile portrays a friendly demeanor and welcoming attitude and can dress up any outfit in a matter of seconds. Plus, it’s free!

Off of the guest list:

Jeans

This goes without saying. Unless it’s a special Western event calling for denim and diamonds, there is no reason you should ever wear jeans to a social fête.

Really Short Dresses

Again, it’s not a night out on the town with friends. So that means save that skin-tight, slinky short dress for another time (like a hot date).

Golf Shirts

They’re called this because they’re best for the golf course. At least wear a crisp button-up shirt (white is always classic, but color adds pizzazz) – even better with a tailored jacket or suit (as mentioned above).

Tattoo Sleeves

I might get beat up for saying this, but let’s stay classy, Denver, by keeping the tats under wraps during semi-formal and formal events.

Break Bad

Rather than keeping to an all-over color palette, try to mix things up with an unexpected pop of color, a standout accessory and a confident attitude – whatever it takes to take things from boring to fabulous. Repeat after me: You want it to go but not match.

Finish the look:

The Perfect Clutch

While your big bag is great for everyday use, you’ll take this handy little clutch to every fancy occasion.

Subtle Earrings

These little accessories are a great way to lure that special someone just a little bit closer.

An Armful of Bangles

Try to keep to a quiet bunch, but add as many as you want!

A Pocket Square

While you’re out sporting that suit, be sure to include a colorful pocket square and tie.

Manicured Nails

This goes without saying, and loudly so, for both your hands and feet, if showing any toe. You’re gonna want to repeat that one, too!
