Entire Men’s Sports Teams are Trans, Claims Alabama Senator Tommy Tuberville Falsely

Tommy Tuberville

Republican senator Tommy Tuberville falsely stated on FOX News Entertainment earlier this month that whole men’s teams in sports programs across the country are transitioning to compete in women’s athletics. There is zero evidence of this happening, in America or otherwise, ever—and the percentage of trans athletes is a fraction.

Formerly a football coach for Auburn University, Tuberville claimed on Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Barteromo that “We have entire men’s teams across this country now that are turning trans.” He tacked onto this objectively outlandish statement that it’s “going to be a situation where it’s going to pick up speed because these woke globalists are pushing these kids to say if you can’t compete in men’s sports, let’s just transition and say you’re a woman and participate in women’s sports.” Tuberville, who is historically unable to correctly label the three branches of government despite being elected to participate in one of them, continues on with the word salad, incorrectly labeling trans women as “transgender boys” and saying that “(w)e are going to ruin women’s sports.”

For the record, the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s (NCAA) president, Charlie Baker, told the Senate at the end of 2024 that there were less than 10 trans athletes competing in NCAA-covered programs nationwide. That shakes out to roughly 0.002% of all college athletes in the United States being trans. To throw some science at this issue—despite the human rights violations making exclusion of trans athletes a moot point anyways—a study conducted last year and published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found that not only do trans women compete on the exact same level as cisgender women, but trans women who have been on HRT for a year actually have more issues with lung capacity and other bodily functions necessary to sport competition.

Tuberville’s website, which refers to him as “Coach,” contains an entire section titled “Saving Women’s Sports.” It states that “women’s sports are now under attack from left-wing politicians who want to undo Title IX protections and allow biological males to compete in women’s sports.” He proudly takes credit for the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act he spearheaded in 2022, under which he highlights that “biological males” should not be in locker rooms with female athletes (there’s a lot to unpack there about why men can’t be trusted around women in vulnerable spaces, but we’ll save that for another day). This bill is being introduced to the 119th session of Congress being held this year after Chuck Schumer (D) was able to fend it off for three years, being the Senate Minority Leader for the Democratic Party.

The elbowing-through of the Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act in Congress comes on the heels of Trump’s executive order crudely titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” signed on National Women and Girls in Sports Day (February 5) of this year. In his first 100 days in office this term, Trump has effectively banned trans women from competing in women’s sports under the guise of “protecting female athletes.” He has also issued a barrage of harmful executive orders eliminating trans rights in prisons, schools, bathrooms, healthcare facilities, government identification, and more.
