British stand-up comedian, writer, political activist, and actress Eddie Izzard, who has appeared in films including Valkyrie, Ocean’s Twelve and Ocean’s Thirteen as well as starring in the former FX show The Riches, is receiving support after publicly asking to be identified with “she” and “her pronouns.
Izzard made the announcement during an appearance on the Sky Arts series, Artist of the Year.
“I try to do things that I think are interesting,” Izzard said during the show, in which portrait artists were tasked with capturing her likeness. “This is the first program I’ve asked if I can be ‘she’ and ‘her.’ This is a little transition period.”
Izzard added that making the announcement “feels great because people just assume that they just know me from before—but I’m gender-fluid. I just want to be based in girl mode from now on.”
Earlier in her career, Izzard has spoken about her gender-fluid identity and having modes. She once identified as a transvestite, saying she felt like “a complete boy plus half a girl” and referring to herself as “a lesbian trapped in a man’s body.”
Stonewall has praised Izzard’s bravery and said on Monday that her openness would have an impact on transgender communities across the globe.

Associate Director of Communications and campaigns told PA Media, “We are delighted that Eddie has been able to bravely share her truth with the world. Being open about using different pronouns is often incredibly difficult, especially in the public eye. Her courageous decision will mean a lot to trans and gender-fluid communities around the world.”
While Izzard has not yet made a public statement about her pronouns apart from the Portrait Artist of the Year episode, many are offering support and praise.

Comedian Shappi Khorsandi tweeted, saying, “I see Eddie Izzard is trending. I can’t tell you what she means to me as a comic. Rocked my comedy world when I was a teen and beyond. Changed everything, made room. I love her and this morning I’m very happy for her.”
In other Izzard news, she is gearing up for a grueling January, planning to run 31 marathons for Run For Hope. That is one per day, in which time she will run a marathon on the treadmill and then perform a standup gig.
