Denver Upset with Lack of Communication following Red Rocks Hail Injuries

Red Rocks

People are upset with Red Rocks, the famous amphitheater venue in Morrison, Colorado, after several folks were injured from large hail last month at the Louis Tomlinson concert. The mixed messages and lack of communication left more than 100 guests injured as over 6,000 people tried running for the exits while being pelted with baseball-sized hail.

The concert was not canceled that night, but Red Rocks has canceled shows in the past due to weather, which has left people upset about the lack of warning about the hail.

That night, Red Rocks let concert-goers know that they were on a “weather delay” due to thunderstorms near the venue and suggested that people go to their cars just in case. Shortly after, there was “all clear,” allowing folks to head back to the venue. By the time the next weather warning was issued, asking guests to take shelter immediately, it was already too late for guests, as they started getting pounded with hail. Red Rocks then announced that the concert had been postponed.

Seven people were sent to the hospital for severe injuries, and more than 95 others sustained injuries, from bruises to cuts and even broken bones.

Brian Kitts, Red Rocks’ Director of Communications speaks to 9News about the incident. “It’s not unusual for us to go into a weather delay and then have the weather clear up and the show goes on,” he says. He also shared that the meteorologists on site forecasted about the storm, and that Red Rocks communicated that to concert goers as soon as they learned of the information.

“Nobody realized the hail was going to be as intense and as big as it was,” Kitts says.

Red Rocks issued a statement the following Thursday on Twitter, offering their “sincere best wishes” to people who were injured and saying they would have a discussion with Mother Nature about it. To no surprise, a lot of people who were injured did not like that response.
