Finally returning to the stage, live and in-person after the pandemic hiatus: it’s The Denver Gay Men’s Chorus (DGMC) and the Denver Women’s Chorus (DWC)! The region’s top LGBTQ choruses have announced their line-up for the 2021-22 season, which will also celebrate DGMC’s and Rocky Mountain Arts Association’s 40th anniversary and introduces the DWC new creative director.
“It is a great pleasure to reveal our upcoming season as we come together again to sing,” says Michael Sattler, executive director of Rocky Mountain Arts Association. “While we are well aware the pandemic is not over and are closely following local, state, and federal guidance, after 18 months, we are ready to have our voices heard.”
DGMC will kick off the season with a cherished December tradition, the Holiday Follies: Classics, Carols, and Camps. “Our holiday concert is always so much fun, and this year, we intend to pump up the yuletide spirit two-fold!” says James Knapp, artistic director of the Denver Gay Men’s Chorus. “Whether your cup of tea includes classics, traditional carols, or the irreverent camp, it will have something for everyone!”
Next, Dr. Clelyn Chapin will be making her artistic directorial-debut for the Denver Women’s Chorus in Better Together. Opening in January 2022, the performance will showcase what DWC can achieve together, be it music, connection, or societal change.
“Better Together is an illustration of the key pillars DWC has long given voice to: building community, advocating for social justice, and striving toward musical excellence,” says Chapin. “We’ll celebrate how we supported one another through the pandemic, explore gratitude, loss, protests, and the sheer joy of finally being able to safely sing again.”
Although the pandemic caused many show cancellations in the past year, the choruses are eager to give the people what they’ve been waiting so long for now! DGMC will be bringing Motown and More: From the Temptations to Lizzo back to the stage in March and April 2022. The program celebrates a half-century of iconic African American pop music, starting from the roots of the Motor City that now permeate every genre of popular music today.
In May 2022, DWC presents #LoveWins, a show proudly affirming the right to love, the right to marry, and the power of love to conquer hate.
The a cappella ensembles of DGMC and DWC, Off Kilter! and Take Note!, will also take the stage to show off the vocal stylings of their talented singers.
And finally, the big one: DGMC’s official 40th-anniversary concert and Pride celebration, With Voices Raised: Bold and Unbreakable, will include Unbreakable, a new musical co-commissioned by DGMC and eleven other gay men’s choruses, created by revered Broadway composer Andrew Lippa. An epic musical chronology of the American gay experience spanning 120 years of largely unknown and unspoken history, the story is sure to move you. The concert will also feature inspiring songs of pride, empowerment, and celebration from pop artists to Broadway!
