Denver clerk begins issuing same-sex marriage licenses
After the decision from the judge allowing same-sex marriage licenses to continue being issued in Boulder County, Denver County clerk Debra Johnson began to issue same-sex marriage licenses as well.
Johnson previously stated that Denver would wait until officials felt they had the legal authority to issue licenses before doing so.
Johnson says, “Finally, Denver couples can affirm their honor and commitment regardless of who they love.”
Mayor Michael B. Hancock released the following statement in support of the Denver Clerk and Recorder’s Office issuing same-sex marriage licenses:
“As a city, we have stood together against injustice and for the rights of all people. Today, I fully support Clerk and Recorder Debra Johnson in her issuing of marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples who simply want the freedom to be united with the ones they love. I stand proudly with her as we take another step toward marriage equality for every single resident of this great city.”
The Office of the Clerk and Recorder’s marriage and civil union license counter is open from 8am to 5pm, with licenses issued up to 4:30pm
