The Denver Center Theatre Company, who have previously hosted a plethora of amazing plays, has announced some exciting news for this upcoming 2024-2025 season: two productions along with a full cast. Here is everything you need to know.
The two productions announced for this season are Hamlet by William Shakespeare and I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter by Erika L. Sánchez.
“What a way to kick off the 2024/25 Theatre Company season with two fascinating productions,” says artistic director Chris Coleman. “We open the season with the iconic psychological revenge thriller, Hamlet. It is arguably one of Shakespeare’s greatest plays and is bound to be unforgettable in the Wolf Theatre. Next up in the fall is a vibrant adaptation of Erika L. Sánchez’s New York Times bestselling novel, I Am Not Your Perfect Daughter. This is a beautiful story of girlhood, family, grief, and finding yourself.”
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter follows the story of a teenage girl named Julia. Like many teenagers, she struggles finding her own identity while dealing with the expectations of her traditional Mexican family. Julia, is a daughter to Mexican immigrants who is expected to her to adhere to “traditional expectations.” They expect Julia to be tied to the home, the family business, and to eventually marry a Mexican man. However, Julia has different goals and expectations for her future. Like going to college and pursuing a writing career.
Julia struggles to understand how to maintain the perfect image that her older sister Olga gives her parents. Tragically, Olga dies in an accident, leaving a huge dent in the family.
Overall, this story tackles grief and mental health in a way that is relatable to many who experience one or both of these subjects. This production will definitely help out in bringing awareness to these subjects and the importance of not judging others for their backgrounds.
Hamlet, will be casted: by Ty Fanning, Sebastián Arroyo, Brik Berkes, Anatasha Blakely Seth Andrew Bridges, Todd Cerveris, Erick González, David Lee Huýnh, Corey Jones, Xavier Edward King, Maeve Moynihan, Mark Rubald, Shannan Steele, Brian Vaughn, Rebecca Watson, Shannon Altner, and Jacob Dresch.
I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter will be casted by: Rosa Isabella Salvatierra, Alex Alpharoah, Nicole Betancourt, Daniel Clark, Heather Lee Echeverría, Leslie Sophia Perez, John Plumpis, Brandon Rivera, Tanya De Leòn, Ian Kramer, María Victoria Martínez, and Isaiah Rosales.
Having the best of both worlds, a production that features action and intensity as we are all eager to know what happens at the end with many plots in which may or may not have several outcomes to the story.
However, one is a little bit more personal, as it follows the stages of independence, mental health, and culture as many cultures have many different outlooks on ones life and how their expectation for their children can impact them on a deeper level.
Tickets are available now and will be be on sale on August 27. They can be obtained here for Hamlet here, and here for I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter.
