Denim days are here again

Cooler weather is just around the corner and that means it’s time to slither into a crisp new pair of perfectly fitting jeans. Shopping for the right pair can be a real test of patience, but, once you find them, they’re sure to become a staple wardrobe item.

“I love denim in the fall, especially in Colorado, because a great-fitting pair of jeans is the perfect accoutrement to the must-wear layers of the season,” said Chris Bacorn, co-owner of Uptown’s Soul Haus.

Things to look for this season include sophisticated surfaces and the end of excessive embellishments. Don’t fret though. Many jeans still feature pocket details that help make your butt look great. It’s just that less is definitely more. You want the look to be casual yet elegant – something you could wear for routine days at the office or for a night out on the town.

“I have seen some baggy jeans coming down the pike, but not actually translating to the street,” Bacorn said. “What I do see translating is a wider leg. Some designers are calling it ‘dressual,’ and, while I hate the over-used term, I see the style as less uptight, literally. Think: tailored not tight, hauter not hipster.”

Dark jeans are always hot, and that’s especially true this season with black jeans making a comeback.

“Denim is back in black, as well as that retro styling of designed and dark indigo with rolled cuffs,” Bacorn said. “Fifteen years later, my jeans are back in style.” One pair at Soul Haus by Giorginni features a black vintage wash that looks great with a white button-down.

Meanwhile, a pair of dark blue jeans by Tokyo Five offers a subtle look with subdued pockets, but with rockin’ screen-printed Japanese warriors on the inside of the cuff (so they show when rolled).

Once you find that perfect pair of jeans, make sure to finish your look in a way that turns heads. The general rule, according to Bacorn, is to wear “whites with lights and no dark hues with your dark blues.” However, he warns guys not to get hung up on the rules of what to wear and how to wear it. Instead, go with the style you love and just rock it out.

Another word of warning: Even though colored denim is coming back  this season, it’s best not to overdo it. “I know a guy who can effortlessly swag a plaid vest, white skinny jeans, a mullet and even spectacles,” Bacorn said, “but for most of us, that is one horrific style tsunami. When in doubt, get adventurous with what’s on top, not on bottom.”

The most important thing is that you feel cool and confident in your jeans. “Denver is a denim-donning city, and we wholeheartedly encourage guys to come in, take some time and try a few pairs on until they find the style that fits,” Bacorn said. “Ultimately, your jeans say a lot about you, and we want that statement to be, ‘Get ready to rumble.’”
