DeGeneres' Show Ratings Plummet After 'Toxic Work Place' Allegations

Ellen DeGeneres’ long-running, daytime talk show has graced the televisions of millions since 2003.  Many looked forward to the stories of everyday heroes in communities around the world as well as celebrity guest hosts, sizable giveaways, and the lighthearted comedy DeGeneres brought to every episode.

Following allegations of a toxic work environment, the show has seen its ratings plummet to 1.5 million over the past six months. This same time last year, the show brought in an estimated 2.6 million viewers, but after reports of sexual assault and racism on the part of top producers, fans began parting ways.

DeGeneres has built her reputation out of being unapologetically herself while her message speaks to the importance of kindness and respect for others with the show’s slogan reading “Be Kind.” However, as the allegations on top producers came to light, the host was not exempt. One former producer claimed DeGeneres herself knew of the problems and even contributed to the hostile work environment.

“On day one of our show, I told everyone in our first meeting that The Ellen DeGeneres Show would be a place of happiness—no one would ever raise their voice, and everyone would be treated with respect. Obviously, something changed, and I am disappointed to learn that this has not been the case. And for that, I am sorry.” Ellen stated, after a full workplace investigation launched.

As the current 18th season premiered the show opened with an apology from DeGenerous for the myriad, detailed claims stating that, “Being known as the Be Kind Lady is a tricky position to be in,” and that she “… takes full responsibility for what happens at (her) show.”

Since the investigation, Warner Bros. announced various staffing changes, including the firing of several producers. Although Ellen has voiced interest in leaving the show eventually, Warner Bros. says she will be returning for at least another season. She is still contracted to produce four new shows for HBO Max.
