LGBTQ people are still not represented in media in the same capacity as their cisgender, heterosexual counterparts, and in a world of hit shows like The Bachelor, that applies to reality dating television. Coming Out for Love is a new, online streaming series that hopes to change that with its first season coming this fall, according to a Business Wire press release.
The show was created by award-winning, LGBTQ filmmaker Nicole Conn, who directed the lesbian-themed drama Claire of the Moon and several other acclaimed films, most recently the multiple award-winning, 2020 feature More Beautiful for Having Been Broken.
For Conn, this project was a long time coming.
“I’ve been trying to make this show, in one way or another, for 15 years,” Conn says. “It’s going to be fun, unpredictable, and smart. It will be progressive and inclusive, where our newly coming-out lead dates 18 women of all stripes, living in one house, eliminating all but one by the final episode.”
The first season plans to feature female-identifying contestants age 24 to 38, and future seasons plan to cover other age groups, genders, and identities in the LGBTQ community, and the series will have two shows per year with two hosts per season.
It is produced by Nicole Conn Films Global (NCFG) in collaboration with several LGBTQ community partners, and Conn will direct the show.
Casting is underway now for female-identified people with a strong social media presence, an energetic and charismatic personality, unique style, and the desire to share the coming out journey to find love. Those interested can apply online here.
There is also a theme music contest which is open to all garage, semi-pro, and pro LGBTQ musicians. The winner gets $1,500, and other women-themed song submissions will be considered for use in other portions of the show. Submissions are open through May 31, and you can sign up here.
According to the NCFG Twitter account, the very first Coming Out for Love contestant will be revealed at an exclusive, virtual fundraiser taking place Saturday, April 24.
