Colorado’s Battle Amidst 2025 Anti-Trans Bill
On the first day of President Trump’s second term, an executive order was signed directly targeting the rights and identities of trans and nonbinary individuals. From the erasure of trans people in federal language to the denial of gender-affirming healthcare for incarcerated individuals, this order signals a significant step backward in the fight for trans equality.
As Colorado remains a hub for progressive action and conservative pushback, the implications of the executive orders are being felt across the state. As the political scene changes, Colorado stands as a beacon of progress. Unlike the Trump cabinet, Colorado lawmakers have committed to enhancing protections for trans people to ensure that these critical services remain available to all. This includes healthcare access and strengthening non-discrimination policies in housing and employment.
As of 2023, the Colorado State Legislature has introduced the Transgender Rights Protection Act. This act ensures the safety of all transgender Coloradans. This bill guarantees access to gender-affirming care. It secures health insurance and cannot deny coverage for treatments like hormone therapy and gender-affirming surgery. This act also mandates that healthcare providers respect gender identity, including using correct names and pronouns.
While Trump’s hateful acts toward the trans community are overwhelming, it is important to remember that we all have strength in our community. You can help by supporting your local trans organizations like One Colorado and The Transgender Center of The Rockies, and speaking with your representatives. This is not a retreat into silence. As Biden’s past efforts continue to push back against Trump’s new agenda, Colorado remains a safe space for the trans community.
Now is the time for the trans community, and its allies, to stand together. For those feeling lost or uncertain remember you are seen you are valued, and you have a community that will continue to fight by your side.
