Legendary queer actor Colman Domingo has been confirmed as the voice of the Cowardly Lion in the upcoming sequel, Wicked: For Good. He’s most known for his roles in Netflix’s The Four Seasons, HBO’s Euphoria, and several acclaimed dramas.
There was much speculation surrounding who would joined the stacked cast as the Cowardly Lion in Wicked: For Good, especially after the director, Jon M Chu teased that fans would be incredibly excited about the casting.
According to The Pink News, the two-time Oscar nominee—first for last year’s Rustin, and this year for Sing Sing—announced the news on social media. On Instagram, posting a video of the star playfully hiding behind a lion stuffed animal, before revealing his face. Adding, “See you Oz!” and giving a wink to the camera.
In the first Wicked film, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) steal a lion cub out of a cage following the capture of Dr. Dillamond (Peter Dinklage)—this lion cub grows up to be the Cowardly Lion.
While not being in the first film, The Cowardly Lion has a fairly important role in this half of the Wicked musical, as he blames Elphaba for his cowardly persona because she didn’t allow him to stand up for himself as a child. He will be featured in the song “March of the Witch Hunters” alongside the other iconic characters of The Wizard of Oz: the Tin Man and Scarecrow
Domingo last made headlines after donning in drag for queer ally Sabrina Carpenter’s music video for her song, “Tears.” Playing an androgynous, Dr. Frank-N-Furter style character that drew on the campiness that we queer folk are outright obsessed with.
The acclaimed actor joins the extensively queer cast of Wicked, with LGBTQ+ actors like Cynthia Erivo, Bowen Yang, Jonathan Bailey, Bronwyn James, and Marissa Bode all playing significant roles.
