Celebrating Black Pride Colorado Day

Denver has just announced a proclamation which declares June 14 as “Black Pride Colorado Day.” This exciting and important acknowledgment highlights the vital contributions of the Black LGBTQ+ community to Denver’s cultural landscape. Oftentimes, we see Pride celebrations dominated by white, cis gay men. Black Pride Colorado Day creates an inclusive space for Black LGBTQ+ folks whose unique challenges can sometimes be overlooked.

This marriage between identities of African-American heritage and queerness is something special. “This official recognition is a powerful affirmation of the vibrant contributions the Black LGBTQIA2+ community makes to our city’s culture and spirit,” says Dr. Tara Jae, executive director and co-founder of Black Pride Colorado (BPC). “It serves as a beacon of respect, strengthening our mission to celebrate and uplift the diverse experiences of our community. As we gather to celebrate this monumental occasion, we are reminded of our collective progress and the ongoing journey toward equality and inclusion.”

BPC, a program through YouthSeen, stands as a reminder that “Pride started as and continues to be an act of resistance.” Black Pride Colorado Day, BPC, and countless other advocates are vigorously working to showcase the creativity and resilience of the Black LGBTQ+ community.

The celebration of the culture and progress of the Black LGBTQ+ community will be kicked off at the Denver Botanic Gardens where the “Strange Fruit of Black Excellence Gala” will be held. State Representative Leslie Herod will be honored with the BPC’s Asante Award. The Asante Award is an annual honor given to an individual who has displayed outstanding dedication to the promotion and preservation of inclusivity, understanding, and support within their community.

June is packed with tons of celebratory events honoring the Black LGBTQ+ community, all of which encourage connection, perspective, and understanding.
