Celebrating Black History Month in 2021

Since 1976, the month of February has been nationally designated as Black History Month. Today, this means actively recognizing the immense hardships Black people are subject to in America while celebrating the great achievements of Black Americans throughout history.

It means taking the time to truly engage with Black art of all kinds, and educating ourselves and each other on important Black history that is all-too-often absent from history classes and discussions. It means acknowledging not only the struggles of Black people in this country, but the love and warmth as well.

After a summer of Black Lives Matter protests and a considerable awakening among many to the racial injustices and inequities of our country, Black History Month is also an opportunity for non-Black people to participate in anti-racist work that is long overdue. While some hope for justice has been restored with the new presidential administration, there is still much to be done, and much to be repaired, if true equality is to be reached.

Celebrating Black History Month in 2021 amidst the COVID-19 pandemic will be different from years past, when in-person events were possible and safe to attend. But, the virtual opportunities are endless and equally as meaningful.

Throughout the month of February, OFM will be posting a number of Black History Month articles that will feature different ways to get involved and celebrate this year. These will include lists of movies and art centered around the Black experience, Black-owned businesses to support, and educational material about Black history.

To get started, don’t miss the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture’s virtual Black History Month events throughout the month of February. The museum is hosting free lectures, conversations, and creative events for participants everywhere. Events focus on topics ranging from Covid-19 to genealogy and are a great resource to learn more about specific subjects and their connections to Black lives in America.
