Caleb Williams, NFL Star, Faces Backlash for Painting His Nails
On July 14, Chicago Bears Quarterback, Caleb Williams posted wedding photos on Instagram captioned, “Young n in Control.” In a couple of these pictures ,you can see Williams has his finger nails painted blue. Some fans have praised his self-expression while others on X (formerly known as Twitter) responded with anti-LGBTQ+ remarks such as, “Guys painting their nails is a social media trend… and it’s gay.”
Many critics speculated about his sexuality, stating, “Caleb Williams has to like men …” This was similar to an event in March of 2024 where Williams was mocked for pink lipstick, nail polish, pink accessories, and called “girly” or “flamboyant.”
His intentions were directed towards his mother. “It started, I would say, three years ago. It was my last year of high school. My mom does nails, let’s just start it off there. She’s done it my whole life. Nobody else does it. I just like to do new things.” For Williams, painting his nails has become a heartfelt tradition and a tribute to his mother.
The public had very different thoughts about this. There were those who ignited a wave of homophobic commentary. It’s clear this event was very challenging to the traditional masculine norms some believe in.
Others defended and admired his freedom of expression, comparing him to progressive athletes like Dennis Rodman. The NFL network host Kyle Brandt called out the negativity and called out Twitter for their aggressive homophobia. Pundits have also defended Williams, noting he is reshaping the narrative around masculinity in sports. Self expression doesn’t diminish his leadership or athleticism.
This incident highlights lingering stereotypes in the NFL. For nail polish, or emotional openness to reveal “weakness” or “homosexuality” really shows deep rooted bigotry. Williams is part of a movement challenging traditional expectations of masculinity in sports. Responses being supportive and hateful signals a larger societal issue with traditional views and a more inclusive, expressive future for athletes.
Caleb Williams is exercising personal freedom through painting his nails. He is honoring his mother and being himself through his style. Those defending him like Kyle Brandt, fans, and representation of past icons of Rodman, is a sign of growing acceptance. This is important because it pushes the conversation about race, gender norms, and identity in sports moving forward.
