Britney Spears’ Father Jamie Files Petition to End Conservatorship

The rally cry “Free Britney!” that had millions of fans advocating for Britney Spears and the removal of her father as her court-ordered conservator seems to be coming to fruition for the beloved pop singer: Jamie Spears has filed a petition to end Britney’s high-profile conservatorship, according to a report from CNN.

Jamie Spears has served as the conservator of Britney’s estate for 13 years and reportedly filed to end the arrangement on September 8.

“Recent events related to this conservatorship have called into question whether circumstances have changed to such an extent that grounds for establishment of a conservatorship may no longer exist,” the filing obtained by CNN reads.

The petition mirrors many of the main points Britney expressed during her first public virtual hearing in late June.

“Ms. Spears has told this Court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship. She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy,” the new filing reads. “She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight. She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.”

The petition goes on the say the Mr. Spears only wants what is best for his daughter, and that if Britney wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes she can handle her own life, her father believes she should get that chance.

The June testimony was the first time fans heard Spears speak candidly about her experience, the 20-minute-long speech detailing how her father abused his power and used his legal authority over her to keep her heavily medicated, pressured her to work against her will, and even forced her to keep her IUD in-preventing future pregnancy.

She told the L.A. judge, “I truly believe this conservatorship is abusive,” adding, “I don’t feel like I can live a full life.”

After the following, Britney’s handpicked attorney, Mathew Rosengart, issued a statement, shared with CNN, saying it was a “massive” legal victory for Britney, also turning the attention to Jamie Spears and the conditions of the conservatorship:

“It appears that Mr. Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath.”

While a judge denied Britney a months-old request to remove her father from the conservatorship in July, the next month, Jamie Spears agreed to step down, stating the decision would go into effect when the “time is right.”

The next hearing in Britney’s conservatorship case was previously scheduled for September, though it’s not yet clear if this will change given the recent news.

While Britney isn’t necessarily out the woods yet, it is encouraging to see that this immense talent should soon be able to take her life back, on her own terms.
