Bring on the boots

Boots continue to be a major fashion trend on every runway, so it’s no surprise that they’re all the rage this season. It seems the masses have taken notice too, because boots can be found everywhere from boutiques to big-box retailers – and on damn near every foot (both male and female) walking the streets of Denver. Take a look around, and you’ll see tall boots, short boots, classic boots and rugged boots. The options are limitless, especially when you consider color and detail choices. And, when you’re about to throw down a good chunk of change on this staple, you want to be sure you choose the perfect pair.
We checked in with Senior Vice President and Fashion Director at Neiman Marcus, Ken Downing, to help make the decision an easy one. “Fashion relevance and of-the-moment styles are what Neiman Marcus is known for,” he said. “Our buyers search the footwear markets around the world to bring the most compelling selection of boots to our fashion-enthusiast customers.”
Men’s trends begin with the return of the hiking boot, tailored for urban terrain. Good news, of course, for all of the outdoorsy types here in Denver. You’ll find everything from luxurious suede to distressed leather, buckles to zippers, and even boots with a combo of styles such as hiker/biker, hiker/sneaker and even hiker/loafer. “Rugged boots go urban, and are worn with dressed-up or dressed-down looks this season,” Downing said. “The classic Chelsea boot also is a constant and perfect for men with a modern attitude.”
Try out the Ralph Lauren Garett Distressed Boot for a macho look, or the Alexander McQueen Front-Zip Boot for a more sophisticated look. Other favorites include the Jimmy Choo Sueded Boot, the Salvatore Ferragamo Chester Strap Boot and the Prada Low-Top Hiker Boot (and really any of the Prada styles).
This season, women’s boots take on the look of lady-like chic with pointed toes and stiletto heels (yay!), or with inspiration from the ’70s (think: wedges and chunky heels). According to Downing, neutrals – such as black, brown, gray and metallic leather – continue to be hot, but a new trend for fall is color-saturated leather and suede in deep Bordeaux. Additionally, exotic skins (such as python) are stealing the show, as well as couture embellishments such as lace, laser-cut details, pearls and metal studs.
Downing suggests trying Valentino’s black suede booties trimmed in pearls for the perfect day-to-night transition. “Laser-cut lace booties from Elie Tahari add a touch of edgy femininity to an urban wardrobe,” he added. “Elizabeth and James by Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen sport cool wedge heels that are great with skinny jeans and cords. Meanwhile, Christian Louboutin’s sexy stiletto with a pointed toe in classic black calf is equally stylish for long and short hemlines. Chanel’s bronze and pewter metallic boot with a chunky heel also looks beautiful with long-hemline dresses, skirts or with a nice pair of pants.”
Regardless of which pair you choose, just be sure they speak your style language. After all, they’re an important investment as your go-to for style.
