Boulder Valley Health Marks 50 Years with the Revival of Condom Couture
Every year, 450 million condoms are sold in the United States, with women accounting for half of sales. According to Planned Parenthood.com, research shows that there are over three million unwanted pregnancies every year. Over 20 million people will contract an STI, and at least one in four people will contract an STI at some point in their lives.
The negative effects of both STIs and unplanned pregnancies are numerous. In effort to address them, many organizations are promoting sexual health in very creative, and fabulous ways.
A Stylish Celebration
On Saturday, September 23, The Boulder Valley Health Center held their annual event, “Condom Couture,” in celebration of their 50th anniversary. Guests were encouraged to wear 70’s attire for an evening of drag, burlesque, and other acts, including returning performer Trey Suits, of Drag Nation. Food, beer, and a 1970’s themed celebratory cocktail were also served at the soiree held at the Jewish Community Center.
“Condom Couture is a night like no other event in Colorado. Our past attendees have been asking for a return of Condom Couture, and we’re delighted it’s back for this very special anniversary year of our trail-blazing organization,” says Dr. Savita Ginde, CEO, BVHC.
A Organization on a Mission
Boulder Valley Health Center is a nonprofit sexual and reproductive healthcare clinic that provides affordable services to all people regardless of background, gender, or sexual orientation. They provided an evening of great fun despite a more serious political climate. The organization successfully fundraised in order to continue their expanded mission of non-judgement reproductive health care services for all individuals in their community.
BVHC’s lasting legacy
Boulder Valley Health Clinic started in 1973 following the Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade decision. The organization has since expanded into reproductive and sexual health care services. They have been in their current location on Valmont Road since 1987.
