Blow the fellas out of the water with these summer swimsuit trends

We know you’ve been working hard all winter long to stay in shape, and now is the time to show off that sexy bod while lounging poolside. Even though you’re barely wearing anything at all – which is just the way we like it – you should still sport a stylish suit that will best flatter your features. Enter Maclovia, a fancy underwear and swimwear company that local designer José María started in May 2011.

These swimwear options are so sizzling, they’ll have you taking a dip just to cool off from the hot looks you’ll get. “We’re incorporating two collections for this summer with three bodies: regular trunk, square trunk and briefs,” María says. “From these, we have a variety of color blocks, solids and style lines that give us the opportunity to offer around 18 different styles.”

Blue Rules

“Whether it’s indigo, traditional navy, royal or azure, blue is a great color for guys because it’s very masculine and sporty looking,” María says.

Flashy Hues

“Try yellow, green or orange for a fun pop of color,” he says. “We started to see lots of solid bottoms with these colors during the spring already. Maclovia’s swimwear opted for a playful and not-so-funky-but-elegant color block combination of black/yellow and navy/coral, which are great assets for the summer.”

Spicy Mustard
“Another trend I’m expecting to see is mustard, which is a very hard color to wear in my opinion, but, if combined with colors like royal blue, looks amazing,” María adds.

Solids Make the Man

“Solids and wide color blocks are set for the summer,” María says. “Don’t expect too many prints, stripes or too many details on garments. I feel like single men should go more for the elegant, minimalist, detailed solids, so they’ll feel more confident. Let the guys compliment you instead of widely screaming, ‘I look so great.’”

Light on Top

“Light colors on tops with very lightweight materials are the way to go,” he says. “Modal, cotton spandex and poly rayon are the knit-top standards nowadays, and we’ll see them in solids and monochromatic prints with draped necklines.”

Polka Dots

“I saw polka dots in some of the runways for this year’s collections, and, even though everybody can wear whatever they want, I feel like they just don’t go with this season at all,” María says.

Wild Animal Prints

“Even if you’re an exotic dancer, this is just bad taste,” he says. “Unless it’s as minimal as possible, as in piping.”

Tie-Dyed Fabrics

“This is an example of lazy design,” María explains. “You just pour colors and that’s it? No – colors have a purpose. They play in combinations for a good reason.”

Shred Trims and Cords

“There’s nothing more distracting than a cord moving around your body,” María adds. “If the deal is to attract eyes to your awesome legs, or simply to show a really good design that contrasts your very well done tan from last weekend’s pool party, then a ‘secondary’ element on your garment like a cord could become the first element that people will see. Try to avoid such things unless they’re flat, small details.

Fake Tans

“If you think people won’t notice the orange makeup-look produced by a fake tan, then think again,” he warns. “It is noticeable, and people will talk about it. Be careful if you’re overdoing this, because you could look like a clown if not worse. Be smart about it, but there’s nothing better looking than natural sun-tanned skin.”

For next year, María believes that silver, light blues and tons of white will be coming back in menswear. “It’s very hard to forecast this, but it’ll be so cool to bring an updated ‘angelical’ grungy punk theme to the scene,” he says. “I would like to see distressed edges combined with faded and/or graded fabric dyes but all in light colors. Perhaps, in my very own personal opinion, if you don’t follow trends, you’re not wrong at all. Follow your instincts, know yourself deeply and you’ll find out what makes you feel comfortable and good-looking. At the very end, that’s all that matters.”
