Biden, Mitch McConnell to Nominate Anti-Abortion Lawyer to Federal Judgeship

Biden and McConnell strike a deal

Joe Biden is intending to nominate Chad Meredith, an anti-abortion lawyer from Kentucky, to a federal judgeship once it becomes vacant. This is infuriating for a multitude of reasons, one being that this is a result of a deal Biden struck with Mitch McConnell, of all people.

Biden is said to have made the deal with Mitch McConnell of the Senate, intended to keep republicans from blocking Biden’s future federal nominations. In exchange, Biden is letting McConnell place judges in a few vacancies.

Chad Meredith is one of McConnell’s picks. He’s a member of the Federalist Society, a right-wing lawyer group, and helped Governor Bevin push the anti-abortion agenda in Kentucky. One way they did that was by pushing a law that would force doctors to do an ultrasound and describe the image on the monitor before doing the abortion. He is also known to be free-handed with his pardons as long as it benefits him and his campaign.

This is what kept him from getting nominated by the Trump administration. Interesting, right?

“I don’t know how the president can say he’s for public safety if he makes this nomination,” says Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky.

This deal keeps Governor Beshear and Representative John Yarmuth from submitting their own nominations for vacant federal judgeships. If this deal goes through, it would make living in red states like Kentucky a danger zone for people that can get pregnant and those looking for safe accessible abortions. Biden allowing McConnell to take his pick is making it easier for this to happen across red states.

“You have to just confront him and say, ‘No, we’re not gonna appoint your people. We’re not gonna let Mitch McConnell appoint judges and other federal officials in a democratic administration,’” Yarmuth says.

This deal only further supports the overturning of Roe v. Wade and makes it more difficult to fight against it for our human rights.
