Bernie Sanders gives HRC’s endorsement of Clinton major side eye

When the Human Right’s Campaign endorsed the democratic front runner for the 2016 election, they had no idea the backlash it would garner from her main opponent, Bernie Sanders. Basically, good ole Bernie is not having it.

After the announcement, Bernie’s campaign spokesperson Michael Briggs talked the Washington Blade, and dished a little bit of tea about both Hillary and the HRC.

“It’s understandable and consistent with the establishment organizations voting for the establishment candidate, but it’s an endorsement that cannot possibly be based on the facts and the record.”

Or, in other words, it’s the privileged helping the privileged. Only, Hilary doesn’t see it that way, responding to Briggs’ words with a tweet, directly calling out Bernie.

So, Hillary, let’s talk about what Bernie was pointing out.

A few short years ago, the HRC staff described the working environment at the nation’s largest LGBT rights group as “judgmental,” “exclusionary,” “sexist,” and “homogenous,” according to a sharply critical report that was commissioned by HRC.

When outside consultants conducted a series a focus groups and surveys with the staff, they released a detailed report riddled with systematic problems within the organization, ranging from treatment of employees, including those who are transgender, to concerns about human resources and organizational commitment to diversity and inclusion.

The report called the company “A White Men’s Club.”

But, the HRC has pledged to fix these problems. But, maybe, the endorsement comes from a place of relation. Hillary hasn’t been the most forward thinking when it comes to LGBT rights. Back in 2004, Hillary said these words …

“I believe marriage is not just a bond but a sacred bond between a man and a woman.” She continued with, “the fundamental bedrock principle that [marriage] exists between a man and a woman, going back into the midst of history as one of the founding, foundational institutions of history and humanity and civilization, and that its primary, principal role during those millennia has been the raising and socializing of children for the society into which they are to become adults.”

A decade prior, she stood by her husband as he signed the Defense of Marriage Act, a piece of legislation that codified gay America’s second-class status. It wasn’t until 2013, when she switched gears.

With a whopping two years of LGBT support under her belt, is apparently enough to garner the support of the largest lGBT group in the nation.

Bernie is calling bullshit. Why? Bernie has been on our side for years. In 1993, he stood against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In 1996, he stood against the Defense of Marriage Act. Both of which were signed under Bill Clinton’s presidency. Hell, he was working for us back in the 70s.

Briggs told The Blade that he doesn’t know what prompted the HRC to endorse who they did, but has faith that LGBT people will recognize who has been in their corner this whole time. Probably even before you were born.
